What is a Social Martyr?

A martyr is a person who suffers greatly or dies on behalf of his or her own belief. A social martyr suffers or jeopardizes or basically "kills" his or her reputation or social standing in order to stand up for his or her cause. Such as Arianna Huffington who strongly supported gay rights, gun control, and abortion while she was still a Republican. And these views are not well received among conservatives. So by taking a stand on such matter, she is risking her social status.
