If Jesus was a myth, why in the world would so many people give up their lives for him?

Christians were burned, crucified, stoned, tortured, fed to the lions. Why would they allow these things to happen to them if Jesus was just a story someone made up? His apostles were historically proven to have lived. Why would they have martyred themselves for a myth?
