Whats the definition of a SOCIAL MARTYR?

I hadn't heard the phrase before, but a google search of it pulled up this article a href="http://www.rutherford.org/oldspeak/Articles/Interviews/huffington.html," rel="nofollow"http://www.rutherford.org/oldspeak/Artic…/a with the quote, "Arianna Huffington describes herself a "social martyr" by taking principled stands on issues like gay rights, gun control, and abortion when she was a Republican in the early 90’s." Based on that sentence, I am 99% certain that the meaning (assuming the author of this used it correctly) is someone who sacrifices their social status for what they believe. (The ideas Arianna Huffington shares are not popular among Republicans.) Hope this helps!
