Why do most church fathers say that it is by works we obtain salvation?

The early Church fathroughid not subscribe to a view of salvaion held by most protestants it was that held by the Orthodox and Catholic Church which issalvationlvation is gained throguh a desire to follow God- and desire would by nature result in works.
