Are my husband and I eligible for a VA home loan?

My husband served about 8 months in Iraq. He and I are ready to purchase a house and are currently going through FHA. We just filled out that form and haven't gotten word back, but while browsing on the net I noticed that FHA had a veteran clause. My husband is National Guard and I am familiar with the the 6 year rule and he's only been in for 5. I'm not sure if the fact that he has served exempts him or not! I have a hard time understanding the exceptions and all so I was wondering if anyone could clarify! Also should we mention to FHA that he is a veteran. Initially we hadn't mentoned it! Thanks bunches! Sorry if I rambled or it was confusing to understand!
