How did Christianity reward its martyrs?

Early Christianity is full of stories of martyrs as are religious wars either inter faith like the Crusades and between churches. Muslims reward martyrs with 72 black eyed virgins. Did the Catholic church hand out dispensations - like a get out of hell free card against certain sins? What special rewards were offered to Christians willing to martyr themselves.
